By pioneers for pioneers
In 2010 the Church Mission Society's Pioneer Mission Leadership Training course launched with a small intrepid pilot group. Today more than 100 people have taken part in the course – from dropping in for a module such as missional entrepreneurship to embarking on an MA.
As a course designed by pioneers, for pioneers, we are committed to equipping Christians for ground-breaking, transformational and sustainable mission. Some people who join us are already involved in a pioneering project and are looking for “on the job” learning. Others are starting something from scratch. Others aren’t quite sure what they want to pioneer yet.
The CMS pioneer course is for both lay people and ordained people and is an approved training pathway for those who have been selected for ordained pioneer ministry. We welcome people from across denominations, from traditional to experimental.
Current students are involved in pioneering mission projects such as comedy clubs, a nail bar, art exhibits, community drop-in centres, a bicycle repair business, revitalising high streets, nightclub ministry, befriending bikers...the list goes on.
Most modules are taught on Tuesdays at Church Mission Society in Oxford, where students can access the renowned Crowther Centre for Mission Education, which houses an extensive mission library with more than 29,000 volumes and important mission archives.
Current modules include:
- Mission spirituality
- Faith seeking understanding
- The Bible’s Big Story (residential week)
- The mission story of the church
- Mission in contemporary society
- Mission leadership
- Missional entrepreneurship (residential week)
- Bible in context (residential week)
- Theology in global perspectives
- Pastoral care and ethics for pioneer ministry
- Emerging worship
- Cross-cultural placement
- Missional ecclesiology
When asked why they chose the CMS course, students have said:
“This course seemed just the right blend of action and theology.” – Sarah
“This is the only course I wanted to do because it’s so mission-focused.” – Karlie
“Here with this group of people, they understand the feeling of being on the edge, of not having everyone ‘get’ you.” – Helen
Whether you choose to do individual modules, a diploma, certificate or MA you’ll be part of a creative learning community where all are welcome and (almost) no idea is too crazy to consider.
The CMS Pioneer Mission Leadership Training course is accredited through Durham University.
